IODE Isgonish - Truro NS

In October 1955, when Isgonish Chapter was organized in Truro, the name Isgonish was chosen because of its historical significance to Colchester County. In 1947 the Historical Sites and Monuments Board of Canada erected a monument at Lower Onslow to mark the portage site on the Isgonish River used as the chief trade route of the French and First Nations from the settlement at Cobequid to Isle St. Jean (PEI) and Louisbourg. In later years the British used the same route as they travelled from Halifax to Charlottetown.
